Men’s Football: This is how the Tokyo Olympics groups stayed

Brazil and Germany, finalists in Rio 2016 with the South American team’s victory on penalties, are linked in group D of the group stage of the football tournament of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, according to the draw at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich.

The teams from Ivory Coast and Saudi Arabia complete their group.

Likewise Argentina, Olympic champion in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, will play in Group C along with Egypt, Spain, gold in Barcelona’92 and Australia.

London 2012 champions Mexico will compete against host Japan, South Africa and France in A; Y Honduras, the big revelation in Rio, where it finished fourth, plays in the B against New Zealand, South Korea and Romania.

Composition of the groups:

– Group A: Japan, South Africa, Mexico and France

– Group B: New Zealand, South Korea, Honduras and Romania

– Group C: Egypt, Spain, Argentina and Australia

– Group D: Brazil, Germany, Ivory Coast and Saudi Arabia.

Format

The tournament is contested by 16 teams, divided into 4 groups of 4 teams facing each other. The two best teams from each zone will qualify for the quarter finals.

The winners of those four matches will reach the semi-finals, the two winners of the semi-finals will compete in the final and the two losers will compete in the bronze medal game.

The winner of the final will receive the gold medal and the loser the silver.
