Shakira just dyed her hair a bright pink – and it’s so ’90s

Shakira could dye her hair anytime, anywhere and pull it off completely. Just one year after running the Super Bowl halftime show with J.Lo, the singer posted her 2021 makeover: bright magenta waves. On Friday night, Shakira unveiled the new bold shade on her Instagram. Swapping her signature caramel blonde curls for intense reddish pink custom color, Shakira’s new hair can be described as a Maraschino cherry red or an ombré magenta. The singer also shared a video of her red-toned hair styled into a smooth, voluminous blowout using Dyson Airwrap’s hot brush, another notable change from her natural curls. During the video, she explained some of her inspiration behind her choice to go red, admitting that she actually intended to lighten the tone a bit. Shakira spoke in Spanish and said she originally intended to color her hair rosy pink, but when the paint ran out, she had to improvise by mixing in another product, possibly a toner, which enhanced the final result. In 1999, her hair had a deep fire truck color during her performance on MTV Unplugged. She also had red hair on the cover of her album Grandes Exitos in 2002. So if anything, this look is as much nostalgia as a change to something new. We’re not sure if Shakira intends to keep the look, or if she’ll let it fade a bit. Regardless, it looks like dramatic DIY hair transformations could continue into 2021. Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness here?
