Meet the three pitching prospects Mets got back for Steven Matz

Of the three righthanded pitching prospects the Mets acquired on Wednesday-evening from the Toronto Blue Jays for left-wing Steven Matz, two have already appeared in the majors.

Here’s a summary of each of the three players who can use the Mets for additional organizational depth in 2021:

Sean-Reid Foley, 25

Drafted: 2014, second round

Reid-Foley came through the Blue Jays-organization as the starting pitcher, and the Florida native made 13 starts at the highest level in 2018/19 with a 4.71 ERA. He did better in five appearances from the bullpen for Toronto in 2020, giving up one deserved run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings (1.35 ERA), albeit with as many walks as strikeouts (six each). According to MLB.com, he mainly throws four-seam fastballs (63 percent) and sliders (41 percent), with an average speed of 94.4 miles per hour and a top speed of 96.8 mph.

Yennsy Diaz, 24

Signed: International free agent, 2014

Diaz arrives as the trio’s highest-ranking prospect, listed as Toronto’s 26th best in 2020 according to MLB Pipeline. He made his Major League-debut for the Jays with one relief appearance in August 2019, conceding two earned runs in two-thirds of a inning against the Baltimore Orioles. Dominican-born Diaz went 11-9 with a 3.74 ERA in 144 innings with 116 strikeouts in 26 games (24 starts) for Double-A New Hampshire in 2019.

Josh Winckowski, 22

Drafted: 15th round, 2016

Winckowski got a notch lower than Diaz (27th) on MLB.com’s list of prospects in Toronto in 2020, but the Florida resident appears to be the farthest from pitching for the Mets. Winckowski hasn’t thrown above the A ball since he was called up to high school, although he has posted a 3.35 ERA with 237 strikeouts in 263 innings in four minor league seasons. Winckowski went 10-8 with a 2.69 ERA over 127 1/3 combined innings for Single-A Dunedin and Single-A Lansing in 2019.
