The Mortal Kombat theme song regulations. Yes, the Pop artifact from the 90’s transcendentally cheesy, but it is too the perfect pump-up jam for Sega showdowns and a movie based on Computer Games based on films about the best martial artists who go to secret locations to beat each other in piles of red blob. Of course, the song wouldn’t work as well as it does, without the eye-catching lyrics: a guy who said “Mortal Kombat!” just before the techno beat seriously fades.
Slate contacted actor Kyle Wyatt, the guy responsible for shouting the line, for an interview about how someone is immortalized as the foremost supernatural-fight-tournament announcer of all time. The very first question gets to the heart of the matter. Slate asks, “So you’re the man who is” Mortal Kombat! “exclaims in the Mortal Kombat theme song, right? to which Wyatt replies, “Oh, yes.”
Wyatt didn’t actually participate in the recording of the song itself – the theme, entitled ‘Techno Syndrome (Mortal Kombat)’, was written by the Belgian group The Immortals and takes a sample of its appearance. in a commercial for the home release of the former Mortal Kombat game. Wyatt says the ad was one of the first he ever made after moving to New York City from Longview, Texas, and he “ didn’t know if it was going to be a short film, a commercial, or a game. ” Wyatt was told to shout the title of the game ‘out of your lungs’ – as if, as instructed, ‘you summon the darkest demons in your body’ – which he did a few times before he managed to get it.
“I know they put it down for the song and did all kinds of variations on it,” says Wyatt. “But that’s me, bro.” He didn’t know what Mortal Kombat was or why he had to shout those words (“It was a performance. I was able to pay my rent that month”) and only learned that it had been sampled in The Immortals song when the 1995 film and 97 continued were released. When he finally heard how his scream was being used, Wyatt replied, “That’s cool.” He also says to tell his friends who are playing Mortal Kombat “Go to IMDb. That’s me, bro” before they believe he’s the man behind the iconic monster.
