Andy Jassy will take control of Amazon after Jeff Bezos announced on Tuesday that he would step down as CEO of his e-commerce empire.
Jassy, 53, joined the company in 1997 as a marketing manager – just three years after it was founded by Bezos – and helped turn Amazon into a profitable technology company in the decades that followed.
It has long been rumored that Jassy would be a potential successor to Bezos.
His rise as CEO will not take place until the third quarter of 2021, when Bezos, 57, becomes executive chairman of Amazon’s board of directors.

Jassy currently leads the company’s cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services, which provides a range of online services for businesses.

Under Jassy’s leadership, the division grew into a cloud platform used by millions, with major clients such as Verizon, McDonald’s and Honeywell.
The service competes with Microsoft Corp’s Azure and Alphabet Inc’s Google Cloud.
It brought in $ 12.7 billion in the most recent quarter, up 28 percent from a year ago.
