This week, guests were invited for just one day to gobble up Spam and Oreo burgers.
The latest food mashup offered by the chain featured two extra thick slices of Spam – canned, cooked pork made by Hormel Foods Corporation – topped with Oreo crumbs and the brand’s classic burger sauce.
“Luncheon meat is a popular dish among young people today,” Abbie Xie, McDonald’s communications manager in China, told CNN Travel. “It has a very strong, fleshy and satisfying texture.
“The flavorful and crunchy Oreo, on the other hand, is a snack that young people are familiar with. By creatively combining the two foods, it not only shows the clash of flavors and textures, it’s also quite timely socially . ”
The limited-edition hamburger, offered on Dec. 21, was one of McDonald’s China’s “members-only” promotions – a series of discounts and specials available every Monday.
A voucher was released for McDonald’s members in China to purchase the burger for RMB 13.14 ($ 2).
“We had a total of 400,000 Oreo luncheon sausage burgers, available at about 3,700 locations across China – each location had limited stock,” said Xie. “The burgers sold out at noon in some stores. Overall sales were good and there were fierce discussions on social media sites.”
“Oreos and lunch sausage are surprisingly delicious [together]”said one member.” I thought the sweetness and the savory wouldn’t match, but it was unexpectedly harmonious and tasty. “
Another Weibo user thought it was good, but too small: “As someone from Shandong, I love this level of saltiness. If you ignore the price tag and thumbnail size, I would give it 80 points (out of 100).” People in northeastern Shandong province are notorious for loving salty foods.)
Chinese social media posters were also not shy about their criticism.
“It wasn’t bad, but it couldn’t be considered tasty,” said one Weibo user. The Oreo crumbs were everywhere. Swallow and you would completely forget the taste. ‘
Another reviewer said it was downright unpleasant: “It was sour and sweet and savory. I could taste the flavors of motion sickness.”
A few users also pointed out that it might be the “easiest McDonald’s burger to make at home” – great news for those of you who feel like you’ve missed out on a rare culinary treat.
