Mayor of Loíza clarifies comments about sexist attitudes in the PPD

The Mayor of Loíza, Julia Nazario Fuentes, clarified his comments today, Friday, that the Popular Democratic Party was a macho collective and indicated that it is a problem of both his party and the New Progressive Party (PNP).

In an interview with this medium, the Mayor and Aldermen explained that its statements should have been made at a general level and not as a direct message to the leadership of the PPD.

“Both the PPD and the PNP are sexist parties,” Nazario Fuentes said, saying in turn that this is because the country is generally a sexist country.

Her first statements emerged yesterday when she was approached by a medium about who should chair the PPD. She said it should be the mayor of Morovis, Carmen Maldonado, but that she might take a macho attitude from some in the party.

Maldonado, who is also the community’s vice president, gave up the presidency of the PPD yesterday, leaving José Luis Dalmau Santiago as the only candidate at the time.

Nazario Fuentes also clarified that his remarks focused on the order being executed, since if a vacancy arises in the presidency, the position must be transferred to his successor, in this case Maldonado.

Before the meeting of the PPD board of directors, several popular leaders argued that the community could not be sexist because the first female governor belonged to that party. They then cited other popular leaders as additional examples.

When asked about a response, the mayor said it is not enough to name these people.

“Machismo doesn’t have to do with how much we are. It has to do with where we are and how they treat us when we arrive. I arrived for work,” he said.
