The Association of Graduate Students of the Residential Center of Educational Opportunities of Mayagüez, known by its acronym CROEM ALUMNI, reported the death of pediatrician Dr. Nelson Valentín González, known to his patients as ‘the pediatrician of the city’ and one of the most prominent members of that student group.

Dr. Valentín González, who served as the director of the Pediatric Emergency Room at Mayagüez Medical Center, died of a complication during a surgical process.

The physician specializing in medicine for children and adolescents graduated from the Residential Center for Educational Opportunities of Mayagüez, known by the acronym CROEM, where he achieved an outstanding academic achievement at the end of his studies in 1977 (4-point student) There he went to the Mayagüez Campus of the University of Puerto Rico (formerly the College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts), where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology “Magna Cum Laude”. He was born in the city of Añasco where he studied in public school. He holds a PhD in Medicine with a concentration in Pediatrics from the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, ”reported Wilson Nazario Torres, Executive Director of CROEM ALUMNI.

“It is important to note that our late“ croemite ”was director of the pediatric ward at the well-known Doctors Perea Clinic in Mayagüez for 30 years. At the time of his death, Dr. Nelson Valentín González held the title of associate professor of the Ponce School of Medicine and was in charge of the physicians residing in the pediatric field assigned to the Mayagüez Medical Center. Puerto Rico loses one of its best pediatricians, an extraordinary human being who managed to get his patients to call him “the pediatrician of the people” for his kindness, dedication and attention to the most needy. We inform that next Saturday, January 30, there will be a wake process at the Malavé de Añasco funeral home from 11am to 5pm. It is important to remember that those present must undergo temperature verification, that the use of a mask is mandatory and that the social distance required in this pandemic will be respected, ”concluded Nazario Torres.
