Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene sets up a new test for House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy.
Why it matters: The freshman Republican from Georgia made a series of bizarre and bizarre comments ahead of her time in Congress that rival former Rep. Steve King’s talk about white supremacy.
What is going on: The latest round of Greene comments, taken from the archives of her Facebook page, features the congresswoman promoting a bizarre, QAnon-bordering conspiracy theory about Hillary Clinton cutting off and donning a child’s face.
- That comment was reported by the progressive group Media Matters for America, which had previously taken note of its statements of support for claims that 9/11 was committed by the US government and that the Parkland school shooting took place.
- CNN reported Tuesday that Greene had executed house speaker Nancy Pelosi for treason, and ‘found’ Facebook comments suggesting the execution of FBI agents.
What they say: Mark Bednar, a McCarthy spokesperson, told Axios he is aware of the comments and will discuss them with Greene.
- “These comments are deeply troubling and Leader McCarthy intends to discuss them with the Congressman,” Bednar said in an emailed statement.
Between the linesWhen McCarthy King, then a Republican congressman from Iowa, stripped of his commission assignments in 2019, he indicated that he set a threshold for the public comments of his caucus members.
- King had publicly wondered why terms like “white nationalism” and “white supremacy” had suddenly become “insulting.”
- Whether Greene’s comments cross the same line remains to be seen.
In an interview with The Dispatch Last year, King predicted McCarthy would use the threat of similar reprisals to keep Greene in line.
- “He will hang before her the sin he has committed against me like the sword of Damocles,” said King.
