The eighth entry in the Mario Kart series has finally gone on sale Mario Kart Wii in the US to be crowned the “best-selling” racing game in this country.
This information comes from Mat Piscatella of NPD Group. According to IGN, this includes the “combined” sale of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the original Mario Kart 8 game on Wii U.
Mat also notes how the latest entry in the Mario Kart series hit the bestseller list last month:
“US NPD SW – Mario Kart 8 is 6th on March 2021 Best Seller List. Mario Kart 8 is the best-selling racing genre video game in US history.”
Nintendo sales data (as of December 31, 2020) shows that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has shifted 33.41 million units worldwide and is the best-selling Switch game. The Wii U original has sold 8.45 million copies as of September 20, 2020.
These combined sales (41.86 million) obviously exceed Mario Kart Wii’s lifetime sales, but separately the Wii game is still technically worldwide at the forefront – with 37.38 million copies sold.
