Mario games shine and Yakuza makes another Top 40 | UK boxed charts

It has been another strong week for Nintendo in the UK this week, and in particular because of its iconic mascot.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is the UK’s best-selling boxing game for the fourth straight week, reaching No. 1 despite an 18% drop in sales. Meanwhile, sales of other Mario titles in the charts have been on the rise.

Mario Kart 8: Deluxe has risen to number 4 from number 6 after a sales increase of 7%. Meanwhile, Super Mario 3D All-Stars re-enters the Top Ten at number 6 after a 36% increase in sales. The Mario collection was created to mark the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros and will be discontinued at the end of the month (including the digital version). Nintendo has been reminding fans all week that the games will be pulled from sale, which could explain some of the boost.

Slightly further afield, Super Mario Odyssey has moved from No. 17 to No. 13 after a 5% sales increase.

Overall, it has been a strong week for Nintendo. Six of the top ten in the box were Nintendo Switch games, and they all increased in sales week after week. The biggest climber was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which rose from No. 7 to No. 3 after a 40% increase in sales. Animal Crossing saw an update this week with items and clothing from the Mario series.

There were no new releases on the charts, although Yakuza: Like A Dragon returns to the Top 40 at number 35 after the release of the PS5 version.

Elsewhere, Spider-Man: Miles Morales ranks # 2 after a slight 19% drop in sales, suggesting PS5 stock is still coming in strong in the UK. However, the PS4 hit The Last of Us Part 2 drops from number 3 to number 11. The game had re-entered the charts last week after price cuts.

Last week’s new releases have dropped sharply week after week. New Switch RPG Bravely Default 2 drops from No. 11 to No. 33 after a 74% sales decline. Meanwhile, Persona 5 Strikers, which debuted at number 5 last week, has completely disappeared from the boxed charts.

This data only counts physical game sales.
