Manchester City boost as Sergio Aguero nears return from injury and Covid-19 hell

Manchester City gets a huge boost as Sergio Agüero returns to training and a comeback approaches from his injury and Covid-19 hell … after playing just 141 minutes in the Premier League this season

  • Sergio Agüero trained with his Manchester City teammates on Monday
  • The Argentinian striker hardly came into action this season due to repeated injuries
  • He signed Covid-19 in January, just as he was finally back in shape

Sergio Aguero was training with his teammates on Monday as Manchester City received more good news after their massive 4-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday.

The Argentine striker has so far seen his season seriously disrupted by injury and illness, allowing him to play just 141 minutes of Premier League football this season.

Aguero was hampered by knee and hamstring injuries earlier this season, but had overcome them and appeared to be back in action in January.

However, after first having to isolate for coming into contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19, the 32-year-old subsequently contracted the virus himself, forcing him to spend even more time away from the field.

However, the Manchester City record scorer has now fully recovered, training on Monday with those who were also not involved at Anfield over the weekend.

Agüero scored just twice this season, both in the Champions League, and Pep Guardiola appeared to miss the striker as City struggled to find his top form at the start of the season.

But Guardiola’s side have now won 14 games in a row in all competitions, scoring 37 goals and conceding four.

Aguero’s possible return in the near future will only add to the good feeling running through the club right now, and will provide a boost in the run-up to a big month of matches.

City will face Tottenham, Everton, Arsenal and Manchester City in the competition for the next four weeks, as well as a Champions League round of 16 first leg with Borussia Monchengladbach and an FA Cup clash with Swansea.

Gabriel Jesus, City’s other acknowledged striker, has struggled for minutes on end in recent weeks, with Guardiola finding a successful formula with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden all playing in the false nine every now and then.

And while Agüero’s long-term future remains uncertain – his contract with the club expires at the end of the season – City hopes he has a big part to play in between as they continue to look strong in all four leagues.
