Man shot by Philadelphia police after opening fire in crowd

A gunman in Philadelphia was shot and killed by officers after he opened fire on a crowd in a wild Christmas morning scene that also saw one teenager dead and another injured, police said.

The incident occurred around 12:20 a.m. on Friday, when agents responded to a dispute between neighbors in the Port Richmond neighborhood, NBC Philadelphia reported.

Once on the scene, they ran into a group of 10 to 15 people who started fighting.

When officers tried to disassemble them, a man in his 40s emerged from a nearby property and fired shots into the crowd, police said.

The officers fired back, hit the shooter several times and killed him, police said.

Two teens were also hit by gunfire, killing one and injuring the other, police said.

Police said it is unclear who shot the teens.

“We’re not quite sure, but (the shooter) shot that crowd where those bystanders were standing,” Philadelphia Police Sgt. Eric Gripp said.

None of the police officers involved were injured.

“This was a terrible tragedy … we just pray for everyone involved,” said Gripp, reported news channel WPVI.

“We mourn the lives lost, but we are also incredibly grateful that our agents are safe this morning.”
