HOUSTON – A man wanted in connection with the shooting of a deputy sheriff in northern Harris County was taken into custody on Tuesday evening.

The shooting was reported at around 5:50 PM near the drives of Forestburg and Veterans Memorial.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the man believed to be the shooter, identified as 37-year-old Moises Martinez, was arrested after a massive manhunt that lasted more than three hours.

More than a dozen police vehicles were on the scene as dozens of officers and sheriffs’ deputies searched the area.

Gonzalez said the shooting took place when two deputies responded to a report of a suspicious person in the neighborhood. He said when they arrived, a man pulled out a gun and started shooting at them. He said one of the deputies has been hit several times and the other is able to fire back. He said the man had fled the scene.

The sheriff said the injured deputy, who he identified only as 35-year-old deputy sheriff Barragan, sustained injuries to his hands, cheek and back. Gonzalez said Barragan is in stable condition and is expected to be okay.

Gonzalez said the injured deputy sheriff worked at the sheriff’s office for 18 months, but worked for another office for eight years before becoming a Harris County deputy.

The sheriff said he believes Martinez had two outstanding arrest warrants at the time of the shooting.
