Man made nearly $ 650,000 despite not showing up for work in 15 years

He didn’t just take the day – he took all theirs.

A hospital worker in Italy has been accused of bagging about $ 648,000 in salary for 15 years, despite never showing up for work, authorities said.

Salvatore Scumace, 66, who has been dubbed the “king of the absent,” has now been charged with abuse of office, forgery and heavy racketeering over the alleged plan, Italian news agency Ansa reported on Tuesday.

Salvatore Scumace was able to earn about $ 648,000 despite failing to show up for his job as a hospital safety officer.

Prosecutors said Scumace stopped acting as a security officer at Pugliese-Ciaccio Hospital in Catanzaro after being put on the books in 2005.

The chronic no-show would have threatened the hospital director to avoid reporting his absence, the Guardian reported.

After retirement, Scumace continued to collect his salary – as his absence went unnoticed by both the new director and the human resources department, the report said.

Six hospital managers or staff are also under investigation for suspicion of having played a role in the skipping of Scumace.

Salvatore Scumace is now facing multiple criminal charges for years of job skipping.
