Make walking more bearable with Dolly Parton’s Apple Fitness series

I hate running a lot less than running, but nothing is more exciting than spending an hour outside in the dull blah from suburbia. Give me hills, trails, water – anything but tarmac and walk past six different Starbucks over three blocks. And while Apple can’t grow trees and lush landscapes out of nowhere, the company’s new “Time to Walk” audio stories at least reduce the monotony.

I’ll get the bad news out of the way first: These audio stories, meant to accompany your walking, just like your favorite band or podcast, are exclusive to Apple’s Fitness + service. So you won’t hear Dolly Parton soothe your tired of exercising with scintillating stories unless you pay $ 10 / month (or $ 80 / year). Or, well, unless you subscribe to her award-winning podcast, which I fully endorse.

It is not only the country queen making her entrance in Apple’s new “Time to Walk” series. You’ll also find stories from Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, musician Shawn Mendes and actress Uzo Aduba. Nothing against these three, but I’m not sure anything can capture the squeaky, sometimes bawdy conversation style of the ever-enthusiastic Dolly.

To listen to one of these audio stories, put on your Apple Watch – a requirement – and pull the Fitness app on your iPhone or iPad. Scroll down to the new Time to walk section:

Tap on a person and you’ll see the option to add their Time to Walk episode to your Apple Watch:

Each of these episodes is a mix of music and chat – some roughly a 50-50 split, others heavier on the chat than the music (which is usually just three songs). Once it has been transferred to your watch, you will no longer be able to start it from your iPhone or iPad. Instead, go to the Workout app on your Apple Watch, where you’ll see your Time to Walk episodes listed below your usual fitness routines:

Strangely, the audio story didn’t start once my gait workout started; I had to swipe left which showed the usual music controls. That can also be a quirk of my AirPods Pro connection, which has been difficult lately; So if you don’t hear anything at first, know that you may have to start the Time to Walk episode yourself.

Besides that, sit back and enjoy the mini monologue. Apple will release a new Time to Walk episode every week on Mondays from now until the end of April. That will give you plenty of time to find the next big distraction you need to keep up with your healthy habits.
