Major winter storm will hit Louisiana and Mississippi Monday, a short distance from South Mississippi

Cold rain is mainly expected in South Mississippi (Pearl River, Stone, George, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson counties). As the rain recedes and temperatures begin to drop, a transition to sleet or sleet or a combination of both is possible. It cannot be ruled out that a very thin glaze of ice can build up on raised surfaces such as trees, power lines and roads in areas along and west of HWY 49 and north of I-10 such as: Pearl River, Stone, northwestern Harrison and northern Hancock counties. This could cause slippery travel early Monday afternoon. Whether that icy glaze can make it to shore or not depends on how quickly the cold air enters and how quickly or slowly the moisture goes out. Significant sleet and sleet accumulations are not expected, but it doesn’t take much to cause travel problems. While a few snowflakes can mix in, snow is not likely to accumulate.
