Major snowfall expected, second winter storm later this week

DETROIT – Severe snow falls into Metro Detroit on Monday night, leaving almost all of them more than half a foot behind. A second storm is also lurking later this week.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for all of Southeast Michigan from Monday 6:00 pm to Tuesday noon.

There won’t be many nuances or tricky forecasting issues here. It’s just going to be brute force snow, and for such a prolific snow maker, the amounts won’t vary that much in the area.

Expect the lowest totals to be around 5 inches in Livingston and Genesee counties, with the highest totals up to 8 inches on the east side closest to the core of the snow. To check the 4ZONE page for detailed numbers.

The widespread snow will diminish at 7 a.m. on Tuesday in all but the northeast corner of our North Zone. There will be some lake effect snow showers in our northern zone in the morning, but areas south of the M-59 are unlikely to see any of that action.

There is already a twin storm just behind our thump on President Day. We won’t get that much snow out of that, because the track will be a bit further east. So they are not identical twins, but fraternal twins.

This storm starts on Thursday afternoon and lasts until Friday afternoon. Accumulations appear to be in the 2 to 4 inch range.

The coldest air in two years has not yet arrived. It will be here from Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning. Our predicted lowest forecast in the Metro Zone is 2 degrees with some areas dropping below zero.

When you’re tired of the cold and want some relief check out the 10-day weather forecast so we will be almost 40 degrees next week!
