Wizards of the Coast’s venerable card game series some strange crossovers over the years. But it only gets weirder and prettier with an extension of the latest crossover into a real one Magic multiverse that even the most seasoned planeswalker‘s head spin: Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40,000

Polygon reports today that during a Hasbro investor call, Wizards of the Coast announced a new line of Magic called collaborations Universes overAs the name implies, the new set of cards will be home to collaborations with other licenses beyond those made by Wizards

T.he first two new additions to the line are about as wild as you’d expect: Wizards is formally partnering with Middle-Earth Enterprises and Games Workshop to bring the worlds of Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40,000 (you would think they would go for it Age of Sigmar instead, but maybe ever?) to the card game. No further details have been revealed for now on the things we really want to know, such as how many countries we need to tap to play Baharroth, Cry of the Wind or if Gandalf gets sick if you bring him back as Gandalf the White.

Suffice it to say, we’re excited. We will tell you more Magic: The Gathering – Universes Beyond if and when we learn it.

Updating: In a new blog post detailing Universes over, Wizards of the Coast clarified that the new line will be clearly separated from the standard card releases, with a special foil badge denoting collaboration cards. The releases will include several Magic formats, including a Warhammer 40,000 Commander Deck, and is not strictly limited to “Secret Lair” drops like recent collaborations with The living Dead

They also noticed that Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, the forthcoming Dungeons and Dragons set, in fact, will not be considered part of the line, and the branding will only be used for Magic Licensing collaborations outside of the Wizards of the Coast properties – we have updated the language from the earlier version of this post to reflect that clarification.
