Luis Zelaya: ‘I only want to work for my country for four years’

Tegucigalpa.

Honduras has been beaten by the corruption, drug trafficking and, in the past year, the pandemic of COVID-19 and the Hurricanes Eta and Iota. Luis Zelaya, Liberal candidate for the Presidency of the Liberal Party, the corruption and the drug trafficking in the country.

As his movement points out, he intends to “recover Honduras” from the crisis it has been trapped in for the past few years. The pre-candidate, which is taking part in internal elections for the second time, plans to help Hondurans through programs to reduce unemployment, improve infrastructure, education, health and other issues of interest to citizens.

What are your main government priorities?

The job. We need to rebuild the jobs lost in the pandemic and work on the foundations of a stable and dignified job structure. The HealthWe need a national vaccination plan that ensures the restoration of normalcy as soon as possible, but also the improvement of our public health system with regard to the supply of hospitals and medicines and the establishment of regional hospitals.

YOUR PROPOSALS

The “Recover Honduras” movement has a plan with 70 proposals to govern the country. The strategy called “Honduras a country with a future” emphasizes the strengthening and emergence of the different sectors of the country. Lead the republic’s budget to serve Honduran women and thus stop being victims of sexist violence and discrimination. Provide vaccines against Covid-19, an educational plan aimed at giving students mobile devices for learning through virtual modalities.

Training. We will implement a major education reform aimed at employment. Education is key to the future, and we need to guide it there. The institutionality. We need respect for the rule of law, the constitution and the role of Honduras in the region and in the world.

The link of government with the drug trafficking it means that Honduras’ international reputation has been kept to a minimum and that this has implications for investments and relationships with other neighboring countries. And the fight against corruption and drug trafficking. Honduras must stop being a narco state. We will Mission in support of corruption and impunity in Honduras (Maccih), we will strengthen the National Anti-Corruption Council and we will repeal the new criminal code, which protects criminals more.

Why would the Honduran people vote for you?

Because our movement represents the right side of the Liberal Party, away from corruption and the conspiracy of the criminals who rule us. Because we are going to promote a great national alliance based on the unity of fairness and because we have a government plan that meets the needs of the Honduran people.

How do you define these elections?

Like the most important in our recent history. We are fighting not only a situation of economic crisis caused by the pandemic, but also a regime that intends to keep itself in power through links or cooperation with the drug trade. The future of the country will depend on what happens in the March 14 elections.

Do you consider yourself right, left or center, why?

The Liberal Party sees itself as the center. And I consider myself a center, I agree with the party’s ideas of social liberalism, which is why I am a liberal. We believe in the role of the state as a guarantor of basic public services and we promote private activity as a generator of employment and wealth.

On what criteria was it based to select its appointees, candidates for mayors and deputies?

The candidates for mayors and deputies were selected by the department coordinators of our movement. The selection on the analysis of their personal and professional actions so that they were not related to corruption. Those who were appointed were selected by me looking for profiles that matched the needs of the country based on their profile: an economist, a doctor and a person dedicated to our ethnic groups and culture.

Given the suspicion and discrediting of the population for the political class, why should people trust you?

Because we are not all the same. I understand discrediting politicians and politicians, but we are not all the same. I just want to work for my country for four years, create stable employment for the people and end the corruption and drug trafficking that are in the pillars of the state.

In the face of the crisis, how do you intend to restore the Honduran economy?

Attracting investments. First of all with local investors. We want to support entrepreneurs and the self-employed, we will gradually lower taxes so that entrepreneurs can invest more and create more jobs. Second, with a government investment plan to improve infrastructure such as bridges and roads to facilitate the entry of international investors. And opening Honduras to the world to make our resource, talent and country attractive to the world.

What will your government focus on geo-politically?

Honduras must be a country open to the world. Today, globalization allows there to be no borders or borders. Our economy, our products and our natural and tourist wealth know no boundaries; but we cannot turn our backs on what is most immediate and near. We need to maintain smooth relations with the countries of the region and, of course, with our main trading partner, the United States. We cannot afford not to have smooth relationships with a country where one million Hondurans live.
