LTPO displays support 120Hz refresh rates, again rumored for iPhone 13 Pro models

The two more expensive “iPhone 13 Pro” models due to appear in 2021 are expected to use LTPO display technology to enable refresh rates of 120 Hz, according to screen analyst Ross Young.

Young confirmed the detail in a tweet saying he had heard rumors about only one model with LTPO, which he says is false.

LTPO OLED displays have a more energy-efficient backplane that allows the individual pixels on the screen to be turned on and off, extending battery life. Young has previously said that LTPO technology is tied to 120Hz refresh rates and must be implemented before ProMotion can be brought to the iPhone, otherwise the 120Hz refresh rate would last the battery too long.

At this point, multiple rumors have confirmed both the LTPO technology and the 120Hz refresh rates for the two Pro-level ‌iPhone 13‌ models. There have also been rumors of 120Hz ProMotion displays for the iPhone 12 models, but Apple hasn’t implemented them and instead stockpiled the feature for the ‌iPhone 13‌ series.

Samsung will supply most of the LTPO OLED displays to Apple, while Apple may also purchase displays from BOE and LG Display.

Apple has long offered 120 Hz refresh rates in the iPad Pro series. Just like on the iPad, the higher refresh rate on the ‌iPhone‌ makes moving content on the screen smoother, sharper and more responsive for tasks like reading, gaming and more.
