Longtime ESPN baseball reporter Pedro Gomez died on Sunday at the age of 58.
Gomez was covered baseball for ESPN for over 30 years, regularly reporting on and appearing on flagship programs like “Baseball Tonight,” “Sunday Night Baseball,” and “SportsCenter.”
“We are shocked and saddened to learn that our friend and colleague Pedro Gomez has passed away,” Jimmy Pitaro, ESPN president, said in a statement. “Pedro was an elite journalist at the highest level and his professional achievements are universally recognized. More importantly, Pedro was a kind, dear friend to all of us. Our hearts are with Pedro’s family and everyone who loves him in this extraordinary world. difficult time.”
The sports network noted that Gomez is leaving behind a woman, Sandra; sons, Rio and Dante; and daughter, Sierra.
Rio Gomez is a pitcher in the Boston Red Sox ranch system.
“Our hearts go out to the Gomez family,” the Red Sox said in a tweet Sunday evening.
Pedro Gomez’s parents emigrated to Cuba before he was born, and he was part of the ESPN team for a game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cuban national team in Havana in 2016. Gomez released the ashes of his father and brother back to the family home, the network reported.
Based on the west coast, he was known for covering Barry Bonds’ pursuit of the home run record from 2004 to 2007.
