Long lines mark the first day of the Lexington VA vaccination clinic

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (WKYT) – The VA Healthcare System in Lexington today vaccinated more than 1,000 veterans, despite challenges on the clinic’s first day.

The organization organized a walk-in COVID-19 vaccination program, the first opportunity of its kind in the country.

Demand for the vaccine was high. Vets waited in the snow for a chance to take the photos. Some were in and out within an hour. Others waited much longer.

The VA said it hoped to advance the waiting period.

“We’re working through that to get everyone to the hospital as soon as possible from the areas where we can get the vaccination.” volunteer Patrick Sinclair said.

Regardless, the men and women who served our country say anyone can help in this fight.

‘If you’re thinking about not getting [the vaccine], please reconsider, ”said veteran Thomas Harrison. Please think about it again. Because it’s going to help the whole country. It’s not just about one person or the individual, it’s about the whole country. “

The walk-in clinic is open Sundays and Mondays at the Bowling Campus near the University of Kentucky. The VA has adjusted the original times. It now opens at 8am. The closing time is 2 pm. Anyone in line or in the parking garage before then will be seen.
