LG has announced a pledge to release future Android OS updates for many of its smartphones, despite confirmation earlier this week that it will exit the phone business entirely. The 2019 or later Velvet, Wing and G and V series phones should receive three Android updates from release year, and “select 2020 models such as LG Stylo and K series” two updates.
For example, the Velvet came out with Android 10 last year and the Android 11 rollout is currently underway. That means it should also get Android 12 and 13 at some point, assuming Google continues its annual cadence. LG variously describes this announcement as a “three year promise” and a “three OS update warranty”.
The announcement is a bit surprising, as LG phones were generally not expected to get that many updates, even if LG was active in the phone world. The company announced a special “Software Upgrade Center” in 2018, but little or nothing changed in the update situation for Android. Most of the latest premium phones won’t get Android 11 until the end of 2021.
Earlier this week, LG’s Korean website indicated that some select models would also receive an Android 12 update.
