Lexington police clear the situation in the center after evacuation

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (WKYT) – A major outage in downtown Lexington on New Year’s Eve has been cleared by police.

Just before 8pm, the police evacuated a large area, including half a dozen blocks, and several bars.

We had multiple reports that the police were looking at a motor home parked somewhere in W. Short St. and Market.

Police said in a tweet that an officer spotted the large RV. An explosives detection dog was brought in and “warned” of the vehicle.

The police’s Hazardous Devices Unit responded to the scene. Police say they have contacted the driver of the RV and no explosives have been found.

“Public safety is one of my top priorities, and tonight’s downtown events remind us of how important it is. In our city, a well-trained, diligent police force protects us, ”Mayor Linda Gorton said in a statement. “Thanks to our agents.”

We are still collecting more information.
