In his first game since undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his kidney in January, Caris LeVert made his debut for the Indiana Pacers with 13 points and six rebounds in 27 minutes in Saturday’s victory over Phoenix. Suns with 122-111.
LeVert admitted feeling “heavy legs” as he struggled to regain air and conditioning, but said he was satisfied with the results.
“About two months ago I didn’t even know if I knew I would be ready to play with everything that happened so soon, so I should definitely say thank you and be happy to be back on track,” said LeVert.
The Pacers organization tried to make LeVert comfortable, especially emotionally.
He had not played in an NBA game as a member of the Brooklyn Nets since January 12, before being traded to Indiana. The small tumor on his left kidney was discovered during the team’s medical and physical exam before the exchange was completed.
In LeVert’s Phoenix debut, the Pacers broke a two-game losing streak on a six-game losing streak. Two-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis posted a triple-double with 22 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Indiana Coach, Nate bjorkgren, he said felt LeVert’s presence was a boost for the team. When the point guard entered the locker room after the game, his teammates celebrated his return with loud applause and support.
“Absolutely, he gave our team energy and his character is very high,” said Bjorkgren. “He’s a good person. He’s been a great teammate all the time he’s been away, so our boys were very happy to have him back on the field.”
Bjorkgren expects “a lot more” from LeVert in the future as he continues to adapt to the team.
For his part, LeVert said this was the second time he had competed in a 5v5 match since his ordeal.
“We have a tough group. We have great guys on the team and they were in my ear today, even before it,” said LeVert. “I can’t thank these guys enough. The rest of the season will be special. We played a great game as a team,” he concluded.
