Leonel Fernández: “The JCE has taken an unfair, irregular and unconstitutional decision”

The former president of the republic, Leonel Fernández, said today that the plenary session of the Central Electoral Council (JCE) has taken a decision “unfair, irregular and not in accordance with the constitution” in issuing regulation 01-2021 on distribution of the state’s economic resources which establishes that only the Modern Revolutionary Parties (PRM) and the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) are considered majority.

“We believe that not only has the People’s Force been affected by that unfair and irregular decision of the Central Electoral Council, but that 23 parties in the Dominican Republic have been affected. We are not asking for favor, we are not asking for privileges. And we accept.” nothing that does not agree with us, but what does agree with us, we will seek and insist on correcting the mistake made, ”said Fernández.

The People’s Force leader said they will appeal to the Central Electoral Council and will continue to appeal in other cases if necessary.

“If the power of the people achieved 5% or more at the presidential level, it doesn’t matter that they didn’t achieve it at the congressional level, because the criterion should be what favors the right holder most. Therefore, we consider the decision of the JCE is dishonest, erratic and unrelated to what it establishes, ”added the former president.

The decision was taken after a meeting of the institution’s plenary session, led by the president, Román Jáquez Liranzo, that took place yesterday and lasted more than five hours.

In accordance with Law 33-18 on Political Parties, Groups and Movements, 80% of the resources allocated by the state to be distributed among political parties will be redistributed equally between the PRM and the PLD as they only those were more than 5% of the valid votes cast in elections.

According to this resolution, the Fuerza del Pueblo Party (FP) reached only 4.54% and the Dominican Revolutionary Parties (PRD) 3.57%; Christian Social Reformist (PRSC), 2.96%; Alianza País (Alpaís), 1.37%, and Dominicanos por el Cambio (DXC), 1.04%, so they will receive 12% of the allocated funds in equal shares, remaining as minority parties.

The remaining 8% of the resources will be distributed to the 19 parties registered in the JCE that obtained less than 1% of the valid votes cast in those last two elections.

Fernández, who made these statements at a swearing-in ceremony, said it is still a feat that the People’s Force has moved up from box number 17 to box number 3 on the election round.

“Elections are not won with resources, they are won with the support of the people … Not only are we the party of the next election, but we are the party of the next generations,” he exclaimed.
