Leon County Health Department confirms 2 cases of COVID-19 UK variant in the area

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Leon County Health Department says the COVID-19 variant that first showed up in the UK is now in the area. The health department confirmed two cases of the British variant in the province, according to a press release.

“DOH Leon considers these individuals to be priority cases and epidemiologists are working to identify close contacts of the individuals and will monitor them closely,” the publication said.

The CDC says that while there is no conclusive evidence that the variant makes people sicker than the original COVID-19 strain, it is of concern because it spreads faster, is significantly more contagious, and vaccines may be less effective against it.

Both Moderna and Pfizer say their current vaccines appear to be working against the UK variant, the press release said.

“The arrival of the variant in our county is another reminder that the fight against this deadly virus is far from over,” said DOH Leon Health Officer Claudia Blackburn. “While more COVID-19 vaccines are on the way, the supply is still very limited. Therefore, it is critical that we all remain committed to following public health reduction strategies by wearing a mask, staying at least two meters apart, avoiding crowds, washing our hands regularly and making recommendations for isolation and quarantine. “
