Lakers benefit by signing Andre Drummond

The Los Angeles Lakers have emerged as a strong favorite to sign free agent center Andre Drummond, sources told ESPN.

The Lakers stars have been on Drummond’s track, and the Lakers’ predicament offers him a chance to break into the starting lineup. The player is on track to finalize that decision soon, the sources explained.

Drummond, 27, approves the waivers Sunday at 5:00 p.m. ET and is then allowed to sign a free brokerage contract. He became a free agent on Friday after making a purchase from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Drummond, who has not played since mid-February, began negotiating purchase terms with the Cavs on Thursday after the club failed to trade him before the deadline.

Drummond, one of the NBA’s top rebounders and a proven goalscorer, was on $ 28.7 million this season. He averaged 17.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in 25 games before the Cavs decided to give Jarrett Allen most of the playing time.
