Kyle Flood would join Steve Sarkisian’s staff in Texas as offensive coordinator / OL coach, sources say

Texas plans to hire Alabama assistant and former Rutgers coach Kyle Flood as its new offensive coordinator and offensive line coach led by Steve Sarkisian, sources confirm to ESPN.

Flood has spent the past two seasons in Alabama, which won a national title against Ohio state on Monday evening. He worked with Sarkisian with the Atlanta Falcons in 2017 and 2018 – Sarkisian served as attack coordinator and Flood coached the attack line – before joining Nick Saban’s staff in Alabama.

Flood, 49, last held a coordinating role with Rutgers in 2009 and 2010. He later became the head coach of Rutgers, who turned 27-24 in four seasons.

Horns 247 first reported that Texas was expected to hire Flood.

Sarkisian, Alabama’s offensive coordinator for the past two seasons and the 2020 winner of the Broyles Award, is expected to remain the Texas offensive playcaller.

“I absolutely want to be the playcaller. I’ll be the playcaller,” Sarkisian told the Austin American-Statesman recently. “I made that mistake a year of my career [in 2015 at USC]. It won’t happen again, not in the foreseeable future. But reality is part of the reason [athletic director Chris Del Conte] and the people in Texas liked me because of the work I did as a playcaller. Why would I suddenly give up one of the best qualities I have? “

Sarkisian also plans to bring Alabama offensive analyst AJ Milwee to Texas, where he will coach quarterbacks, sources told ESPN. Milwee spent seven seasons as Akron’s offensive coordinator before coming to Alabama.

ESPN’s David Wilson contributed to this report.
