Peru’s presidential candidate for the far-right Popular Force party, Keiko Fujimori, has criticized the restrictions imposed to stop coronavirus infections during Holy Week, a “nonsense” for Christians who “want to live their faith”.
“The decision to lock us up at Easter is a new bullshit from the president. Again, his ideological biases are doing a lot of damage to the Peruvians,” Fujimori said in a video posted on social networks.
Interim President Francisco Sagasti’s administration last Wednesday announced a package of measures in view of the Holy Week festivities, including the suspension of inter-provincial land and air transport.
For Fujimori, it is an inexplicable blow to “deny all Catholics and Christians” their faith in such a difficult time. But not only that. There are thousands of Peruvians who saw these days as an opportunity to offer their products and services, but they are also locked up, ”he said.
“President Sagasti, there is still time. Open Easter. Don’t include our faith, don’t include our work,” Keiko Fujimori has appealed.
Last Saturday, the Peruvian Ministry of Health reported that the milestone of 50,000 deaths has been exceeded since the outbreak of the pandemic. The new epidemiological equilibrium of the Andean country recorded 5,334 new cases and 188 deaths from the coronavirus this Saturday, bringing the total number of positive cases since the start of the pandemic to 1,460,779 and 50,085 deaths.
