Kate Middleton visited Saturday to a memorial to Sarah Everard, the London woman who was murdered last week walking home from a friend’s apartment.
The Duchess of Cambridge stopped unannounced at the Clapham Common bandstand to add a bouquet to the monument.
Kensington Palace said Middleton wanted to “pay her respects to the family and Sarah,” SkyNews reported. “She remembers what it was like to walk through London at night before she got married.”
Everard’s murder has led to a fresh reckoning for Britons over women’s safety.
Organizers had hoped to hold a vigil for the safety of women at the site of the memorial later Saturday, but they were denied a permit due to the pandemic. Instead, residents of London are urged to shine a light at their door at 9:30 PM
Earlier Saturday, Wayne Couzens, 48, a police officer who patrolled embassies in London, first appeared in court. He is charged with kidnapping and murder in Everard’s death.
