KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs are hopeful that quarterback Patrick Mahomes will have recovered from recent toe surgery to participate in the team’s mini camp in June. He is expected to be ready to leave later in the summer at the start of the training camp.

“The recovery will take three months, so we are hopeful [Mahomes returns] somewhere near that obligatory mini camp, if we have one, ”said General Manager Brett Veach. We certainly think he will be ready to go at training camp and we will be smart with him. ‘
Veach said the Chiefs were also hopeful that Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher would be ready for the start of the training camp. Schwartz underwent back surgery last week, and Fisher underwent surgery on a ruptured Achilles tendon on Jan. 29.
“I would probably say Pat is ahead of them just because of that kind of injury and a faster recovery,” said Veach. “Hopefully we have all three ready to go to training camp.”
On other matters, Veach said:
• The Chiefs would try to renew the contract of defensive defender Tyrann Mathieu, just as the Chiefs re-signed Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and defensive lineman Chris Jones last year. Mathieu has one season left on the deal he signed as a free agent with the Chiefs in 2019.
“We would put Tyrann in that category,” Veach said. “We will have to do some work to get to him and his agents, but not enough can be said about Tyrann and his importance to this team, both on the field and in the locker room. He has proven that he is not only great player but a great leader and great person to develop the young boys and in the community.
“We hope he will be safe with this organization for years to come.”
• The Chiefs want to keep wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent.
“I love Sammy and I love what he does for our insult,” Veach said. “There will be challenges this year. It will be a lot more challenging to keep him and bring him back this year just because of where we are. We were able to work with him and his agent last year and make it work. This year it will probably be more difficult just because we have some work to do to get under the cap, and once we do, we’ll have to see where the markets are going. ”
Speaking of what the Chiefs would do if they had to replace Watkins, Veach said: “We are certainly blessed with Tyreek Hill and expect great things from Mecole Hardman this year. We are all excited about Byron Pringle’s development. those three players.
“I don’t see us running out of the gates in a free agency and signing a receiver for the first week. I don’t think we’re there. If the market drops and things make sense to us, we’ll be smart and selective. for us in free service, I think there is enough depth to possibly address it in the design. “
