Jose Quintana, Los Angeles Angels agree to 1-year deal, source says

The Los Angeles Angels, desperate to start pitching, agreed to an $ 8 million contract with veteran lefthanded Jose Quintana on Tuesday, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Quintana, who previously pitched under current Angels manager Joe Maddon at the Chicago Cubs, was limited to just 10 innings in 2020, largely due to thumb surgery. Before that, the 31-year-old started an average of 32 from 2013 to 2019, compiling an ERA of 3.72 with a 3.23 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Quintana joins a rotation that includes Andrew Heaney, Dylan Bundy, Griffin Canning, and possibly Shohei Ohtani, coming in somewhere near the summit.

Quintana is the fifth one-year addition of freshman general manager Perry Minasian, after shortstop Jose Iglesias, closer Raisel Iglesias, catcher Kurt Suzuki and lefty reliever Alex Claudio. They will make a combined $ 23.25 million in 2021.

The Athletic first mentioned the agreement.
