José Luis Dalmau becomes the new president of the Puerto Rico Senate

The Senator of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD), Jose Luis Dalmau Santiago, was today elected the new president of the Senate.

Dalmau was elected with the 12 votes of the PPD delegation, as well as with the approval of the Dignity Project Senator Joanne Rodríguez Veve, as well as the independent senator Jose Vargas Vidot.

Delegations from the New Progressive Party (PNP), the Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana and the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) abstained. There was no vote against it.

“He is a leader who has grown up in the most difficult moments of our recent history … the best person to take up the post of Senate President is without a doubt Jose Luis Dalmau Santiago,” said Rubén Soto Rivera, Senator for the district. from Arecibo, in making the nomination, a motion supported by Senator de la Pava Gretchen Hau.

During his appointment, Soto Rivera also recognized the “Humility of character, nobility of mind and extraordinary ability to work as a team” by Dalmau Santiago.

In an earlier interview with The new day, Dalmau indicated that it will immediately focus on three areas: health – including COVID-19 -, education and economic development. “There are a lot of families who don’t have a way of making a living, so I think we should start working out these three points together with the executive branch in the short term,” said Dalmau.

He added that for the past few weeks he has taken on the task of analyzing the government programs of all parties. “We have a diverse senate, and you have to see where there are coincidences”, he claimed.

Senator Javier Aponte Dalmau was also announced as PPD spokesman at the ceremony. The deputy spokesman, in turn, fell on the figure of Gretchen Hau. For the PNP, these positions will be held by former Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz; and Senator Carmelo Ríos, respectively.

The spokesman for the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) is taken over by the senator, María de Lourdes Santiago. While the Citizen Victory Movement (MVC) delegation, formed by Ana Irma Rivera Lassen and Rafael Bernabe, will act as the spokesperson and deputy spokesperson respectively.

The event was attended by Governor Pedro Pierluisi, as well as several leaders of the PPD, a community that earned the highest number of seats in the Senate. They included former governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, the President of La Pava, Carlos Delgado Altieri, and the former President of the Senate, Eduardo Bhatia.

Meanwhile, the popular mayors of Caguas, Juncos, Villalba and Yabucoa were also in attendance.

The works were inaugurated – according to the political code – by outgoing senate secretary Manuel Torres Nieves.
