Madrid. Puerto Rican point guard José Juan “JJ” Barea will play for Movistar Estudiantes, of the Spanish Basketball League this season.
Students, a historic Madrid club currently occupying 16th position of the 19-team League in Spain, announced on Saturday the recruitment of Barea, 36, an institution in the NBA, through the end of this season, and especially in the Dallas Mavericks , where he was key in achieving the franchise’s only ring of champions, in 2011.
In his 14 consecutive seasons in the NBA (between 2006 and 2020), there were 11 in two phases with the Texas franchise, signing a contract at the beginning of this season that ended in December.
In his other three seasons in the NBA, he defended the Minnesota Timberwolves jersey (2011-2014), with a total of 831 games in the regular season and 50 in the playoffs.
Barea is also one of the stars of the Puerto Rico team, winning gold medals at the 2011 Pan American Games, the 2006 and 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games; and silver from the 2007 Pan American Games.
The player will arrive in Madrid this week to participate in Movistar Estudiantes training. In this way he fulfills a small personal goal mentioned in the Spanish press ten years ago: to play in the land of his ancestors, residents of Ribota de Sajambre (León), says Movistar Estudiantes.
