Jon Stewart speaks out about Reddit-GameStop merchants in the very first tweet

Former ‘Daily Show’ presenter Jon Stewart officially joined Twitter on Thursday and had some thoughts on Reddit-inspired merchants pushing the boom Share price of GameStop this week.

“This is bullshit,” Stewart said in his very first tweet. “The Redditors aren’t cheating, they’re joining a party Wall Street insiders have been enjoying for years. Don’t shut them down … you might be suing them for copyright infringement instead !!”

“We have learned nothing from 2008,” he added, referring to the 2008 financial crisis.

Stewart’s comments appeared to be targeted online brokerage Robinhood and other major trading platforms that temporarily banned trading on GameStop and other popular stocks that saw massive swings this week. Although Robinhood eventually reversed its decision on GameStop, it still met with criticism from Republican and Democratic lawmakers, who plans to hold hearings about the subject.

The financial drama took Stewart to Twitter. Less than a day after his initial tweet, Stewart had gained more than 700,000 followers on the platform.

“Thanks for the warm welcome! I promise I will only use this app sporadically and ineffectively,” says Stewart tweeted.

Stephen Colbert, host of “The Late Show”, noticed and welcomed him.

“Well, one thing has changed since 2008: a friend of mine joined Twitter,” he said said.

Stewart was a fan favorite for many years hosting the “Daily Show”. In recent years, he has been known for activism and lobbying Congress to expand benefits for first responders on 9/11.
