On The Mandalorian, characters say “This is the way.” In the case of the big cameo from the second season although originally it was not.

By this time Star Wars fans know that season two of The Mandalorian finished with Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) and Din Djarin leaving behind with a Jedi he was connected to through the Force. A Jedi by name Luke skywalker. It was an exciting moment for many fans, one that raised a lot of questions Star Wars Get on.

Usually such a revelation is something a show will build towards after years of planning. In this case, however, that did not happen. The idea came during the process, not before.

“No,” Favreau said when requested by the WGA if bringing Luke back was always the plan. The story unfolded as I wrote it. The Mandalorian inherits much of the existing Star Wars stories, and when I write that context is always a consideration. It became clear that, within the established continuity, certain things were likely to happen. “

This means that if Grogu were to be trained by a Jedi, the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy at the time would likely be Luke Skywalker. And yet, bringing back the star of Star Wars wasn’t an easy decision, especially since introducing him could potentially affect so many other stories.

“We have given ourselves a lot of freedom because of the gap between the films,” Favreau continued. Dave Filoni and I are in constant discussion about how each story choice is affected by, and would affect, existing Star Wars material.”

We’ve discussed this in detail before (read it here), but Favreau is right. While it is true that the comics, books and games touch upon Luke’s story during this period, and of course the films tell the full story, there are decades left in between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Most of those stories play out closer The Force Awakens (for example after Ben Solo is born) while The Mandalorian come closer Return of the Jedi. So much can happen in between and it seems that The Mandalorian will continue to research more of that.

That’s really the only plot Favreau discussed in the interview, but he dives deep into his writing process, pitching the show, the excitement of writing Star Wars, and more; you can go to the WGA site to read it. The Mandalorian season three is expected to debut sometime in 2022.
