On Sunday, Last week tonight host John Oliver followed in the footsteps of Saturday Night Live poking fun at the news – broken by none other than The Daily Beast – that Trump-toadying Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) reportedly paid his friend (and accused sex trafficker) Joel Greenberg $ 900 through Venmo, who then sent the money to three young women, who describe the transactions as ‘Tuition’, ‘School’ and ‘School’
“You idiots!” cried Oliver. “I can’t believe I should say this, but if you are conducting suspicious, potentially criminal transactions, Venmo is not the app to use. Venmo is for one thing only: passing judgment on friends’ spending habits while obsessing over wild financial mysteries. ”
He added: ‘And look, I have to tell you, Matt Gaetz has denied all charges. And I am sure there will be much more to be said about all of this when he goes to prison
But earlier in the program, British-born Oliver spoke about the death of Prince Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh. Philip, the longtime husband of the British Royal Queen Elizabeth II, died in Windsor Castle on April 9 at the age of 99. And although the cause of death has not been disclosed, Philip is said to have passed away peacefully (according to the palace).
“In the UK, Prince Philip died, and that’s a tragedy if you don’t know about him,” said Oliver. “And even if you know a little bit about him, you may not know this.”
Oliver then pitched to a Sky News excerpt from a British expert who, when asked how Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II met, replied, “Well, they were related.”
“Yes it’s true. Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth are cousins who later got married – otherwise known as a Giuliani meet cute,” said Oliver.
Indeed, Prince Philip left a complicated legacy – one that included a lot of charity work, but also a long history of racism.
