John David Washington and Zendaya can’t decide if ‘Malcolm & Marie’ belong together: ‘this is bad’

The stars deliver impressive performances in the Netflix movie they quarantined

John David Washington and Zendaya are quite compelling as a couple in the midst of an epic blowout Malcolm and Marie, but none of the actors is quite sure how they feel about the couple they are portraying.

The talented couple are the only actors in Netflix’s black and white movie Sam Levinson that was produced at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. Described as a “painfully romantic drama in which a filmmaker (Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) return home after a celebratory movie premiere while waiting for what is sure to be imminent critical and financial success. The evening suddenly takes a turn when revelations about their relationships emerge and put the power of their love to the test ”is a marvel to watch. It’s also a life-changing moment for Zendaya, whose portrayal of a recovering drug addict, Marie, confirms the fact that she is a grown woman and a real force in Hollywood.

Even though the 24-year-old actress beautifully embodies the complicated character, even she doubts whether Malcolm, played by Washington, and Marie should be together.

‘I’m divided, just as everyone probably is … I think the great thing about what we’re doing there – actually is the point to have the conversation; the dialogue and the back and forth, the polarizing aspect of it, ”Zendaya said theGrio after the first showing of the film. ‘I don’t think we should all agree. And it shouldn’t be so black and white. I think it must be a bit messy and confusing and contradictory, you know? So like everyone else, I go back and forth. “

“Sometimes I think they are great for each other and they are the only people who can really interact and see each other and push each other in the right way,” she continued. “And they just know each other like no other. And on other days I think this is not how it should work. Like, this is wrong. They have to go to therapy. They don’t have to be together. They are codependent. This is bad. “

“It’s hard and it’s – and it’s confusing for me too, and I’ve been able to live with the characters and I’m still learning more about the characters,” added Zendaya. “I think when we do interviews, like me – people bring up different things that I might not understand or recognize.”

Washington seems to be equally unsure whether or not Malcolm and Marie belong together.

“It could be healthy for their art, but I don’t know if it is healthy for their personal life. Not really. That said, is this the only time they’ve gone this far? We are talking about a snapshot of their relationship, ”he said.

“This could be the worst night they’ve ever had … If this is the biggest fight they’ve ever had, I think they might be able to overcome this,” said the 36-year-old actor. “But if this is building up, if there has been a little bit of it, you know, there have been incremental things leading up to this night … then no, I don’t think this is healthy at all.”

Viewers are likely to be equally torn when they watch the movie showing the dark places we go when love is at stake. Many may be mesmerized by Zendaya’s truly remarkable on-screen presence or frustrated by the director’s barely veiled pricks on topics he may not be the best source of. Everyone will no doubt be amazed at the gravity this tiny crew required to perform this function under the extreme and uncertain conditions provided by the lockdown.

“There is a certain amount of responsibility, not only as a creative, but also as a producer. We are both producers of this and not just as ‘producers’, but like actually putting our name on it, putting our heart in it, putting our money in it, ”said Zendaya, who also starred in the HBO series created by Levinson. Euphoria.

“There were a lot of strict protocols in place and we were able to make this bubble of people; this production bubble that you are in once you are inside. You can’t get out anymore. We were also able to reconstruct what the fair model of filmmaking is, ”she continues.

“We had a real owner of this movie, which I don’t know how many times that has ever been done before, but it feels like the right way to structure movies,” said Zendaya, “that the people who really give their heart and soul and their time in something really got the benefit of it. So of course it was daunting and scary. But we also worked hard and everyone who was there wanted to be there. “

Although her performance was rejected when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the Golden Globe Awards, Zendaya has already made an impressive mark on the industry with this project.

“I’m proud of the movie, but I’m even more proud of how we managed to make it,” she said.
