Joe Mosgrove throws the first MLB no-hitter of the 2021 season

The right to the San Diego Padres Joe Musgrove threw a no-hitter on Friday in a 3-0 win against the Texas Rangers at the Goble Life Stadium in Arlington.

Puerto Rican receiver Víctor Caratini was part of history when he received Musgrove’s shipments. Last year, the Cayey was behind the plate when Alec Mills threw a no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs on September 13.

The Padres were the only active MLB franchise without a no-hitter, and it came in their 8,206th game of the regular season.

“It’s great to have him in the Padres uniform,” said Musgrove, a San Diego resident. “It’s unbelievable that it’s the first in the franchise’s history.”

In only his second start at San Diego, Musgrove (2-0) struckout 10 batters and faced 28 batters, one more than the minimum.

The lone runner of the Rangers was Joey Gallo, who was hit by a two-out pitch in the fourth inning.

“There were three different scenarios where I thought I lost it,” said Musgrove.

Musgrove, who threw 77 of his 112 pitches for strikes, is in his sixth season in the majors. He previously pitched for Houston (2016-17) and Pittsburgh (2018-20) and had never pitched a complete game in his previous 84 starts.

“I’m fucking exhausted, man,” he admitted.

It was the first no-hitter in the majors this season and only the second complete game.

In his home debut in San Diego last Saturday, he struckout eight batters in six scoreless innings against Arizona. He had no tickets to win that game, as he threw 57 of the 78 places for strikes.

It was the fourth time that a no-hitter had been thrown against the Rangers. The last was on April 18, 2007 by Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox.

According to Baseball-Reference, there were 307 no-hitters in MLB history before Musgrove and the Padres. That included 293 singles no-hitters and 14 no-numbers combined.
