Neon Genesis Evangelion is so dense with symbolic meaning that it can be easy to overlook some of the smaller, simpler ways that the series uses seemingly mundane objects the characters to hold Dear to convey their thoughts and feelings about ideas like love and pain in the story being told.

Although Gendo Ikari is the only core Evangelion character that consistently sports glasses, the glasses will mean a lot to others-ljust like his emotionally vulnerable son Shinji and Rei, the enigmatic young Eva pilot holding old, broken Gendo’s glasses as a keepsake. As the series progresses, you can see how Gendo’s glasses are actually one of many solid, translucent surfaces that characters interact with feel like different ways Evangeliontries to gesture to the existence of absolute terror fields, the harsh light projections that Evangelion and Angels use to defend themselves and attack each other.

You could spend hours pondering the meaning of how people interact with glasses in it Evangelion and whether they are just simplified, miniaturized socially acceptable AT fields that people wear on their faces. While the glasses do not immediately scream Evangelion at first glance, if you take a closer look, you can see the subtlest nods to the two Eva pilots in tiny details based on their respective techno-organic mechs. The sunglasses are clearly something of a different story as it’s pretty hard not to recognize what those purple frames are all about.

JINS ‘ Evangelion partnership won’t start shipping until later this fall, but pre-orders opened today Agree three times is currently still scheduled for premiere in the U.S. on March 8, despite the film recent release date delay in Japan.
