The Jets may be puzzled by a possible pursuit of Deshaun Watson.
While at least one report has identified the Jets as Watson’s preferred destination in a trade, the Texans’ disgruntled star quarterback reportedly knows that the amount of draft hooks they could give up to land him could be a double-edged sword .
[Watson] is aware that any trade with New York would limit the Jets’ ability to build a quality roster around him, ”The Athletic reported Thursday as part of a deep dive into how Watson’s time in Houston was souring.
While the Texans have insisted that despite his request, they have no intention of trading Watson, the Houston Chronicle previously reported that their asking price for him would be at least two first round tips, two second round tips and two young defensive starters.
The Jets have two first-round picks in each of the following two versions – including the No. 2 and No. 23 picks in April – but the package that might be needed to trade for Watson can certainly be expensive for a team that a 2-14 season that is not filled with talent and has enough gaps to fill.
Watson has a no-trade clause that could tell him where he is going, when and if the Texans will proceed with the negotiations.
In the meantime, Watson and his circle are still waiting for a trade as the NFL’s quarterback carousel continues to spin – with Carson Wentz’s Eagles’ trade to the Colts on Thursday the last deal to be struck.
“What are the criteria for a quarterback asking to be traded and then actually being traded?” Quincy Avery, Watson’s personal quarterback coach, tweeted shortly after Wentz got his reported trade wish fulfilled. “Ask a friend.”
