Jennifer Lopez addresses the nation in Spanish during the inauguration

Jennifer Lopez took the inauguration stage to perform a hodgepodge of patriotic songs – and she took a moment to slip into one of her own hits and address the nation in Spanish.

Lopez started her performance with “This Land is Your Land”, turning into “America the Beautiful”. Then Lopez spoke in Spanish.

“One nation, under God, indivisible, with freedom and justice for all,” she said, reciting part of the pledge of allegiance: “One nation, under God, indivisible with freedom and justice for all.”

Lopez, who is Puerto Rican, has several Latin albums and often sings in Spanish. At last year’s Super Bowl halftime show, Lopez and fellow headliner Shakira both celebrated their cultures in their song and dance, representing Hispanic Americans. Lopez also released Colombian singer J Balvin and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny.

Lopez’s inauguration performances were reminiscent of her Super Bowl show, when she slipped into her 2000 hit “ Let’s Get Loud, ” which she also sang at halftime with her daughter, Emme Muñiz.

Lots of fans on Twitter were proud Lopez took a moment to add her own flair and give up some of the pledge in Spanish. “We watched the inauguration and @JLo spoke spanish. One of the students in my class says, “I know what she said !!” This is why representation is important! ” a teacher tweeted.

“Jennifer Lopez says part of the pledge of allegiance in Spanish … Wonderful. So wonderfully fitting,” wrote one Twitter user.

“Yes it was, I am Puerto Rican and can’t stop the tears,” replied another.
