On a recent episode with “Mom” star Anna Faris, the couple talked about the “fish out of the water” concept, where Faris talked about how she first broke into the business after starting acting as a child.
McCurdy could tell by saying, “My mom put me in it when I was six, and based on age, I think, 10 or 11, I was the main financial support for my family.”
“It was very much the pressure from my family who didn’t have much money, and this was the way out,” she said, “which I think really drove me to some degree of success.”
McCurdy said she never really wanted to be in the business and quit acting a few years ago to try to write and direct.
Acting was difficult for her at first, she said, because of the anxiety she had – especially when auditioning.
Although she ended up starring with Ariana Grande on Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” https://news.google.com/ “Victorious” spin-off “Sam & Cat,” McCurdy said that acting caused her to put her “own emotions on it. slow down ‘to focus on that of the character.
“I eventually quit after my mother passed, because with her death a lot of her ideas for my life died, and that was her own journey and certainly a difficult one,” McCurdy said.
The whole experience led her to say, “I hate my career in many ways,” leaving her feeling “so unfulfilled by the roles I played and feeling like it was the most just cheap, embarrassing” thing used to be.
Faris asked her if she would be tempted to act again at all.
McCurdy said she wrote and acted on a one-woman show despite being anxious.
“I think that one-woman show would be the best of it,” said McCurdy.
