Java’s ring of fire rumbles further: Indonesian volcanoes erupt – in pictures World news

Volcanoes in Java continue to show troubling signs, with authorities closely monitoring seismic activity as they spew lava and ash many miles into the atmosphere.

At 3,676 meters (12,060 feet), Mount Semeru in East Java is one of the highest volcanoes in Indonesia. Mount Merapi in Central Java is an active 2,929-meter (9,610 ft) volcano with a hiking trail to the summit and a surrounding national park. Both continue to harass the authorities.

On January 16, 2021, the Semeru Volcano Observatory issued an aviation warning of an ash cloud moving northeast with an ash cloud top at about 5,676 meters (18,163 feet) above sea level, but it may be higher than what can be clearly observed .
