Jaguars seeking help to run back

Like any fantasy GM that has landed James Robinson Last season, the Jaguars could do well by signing the Division I FCS product after the 2020 draft. But the new Jacksonville regime would favor backfield competition starting next season.

Robinson logged 240 carriers last season. That total represented a staggering portion of the team’s hasty efforts. In the 14 games that Robinson played, no other backward Jaguar registered more than 10 bins. That ratio will almost certainly change to Urban Meyerfirst season.

He’s tough. He has a great mindset, the type of player we are looking for. We also need to add some explosive to that room and we need to be able to take some of the carriers from James, ”Jags GM Trent Baalke said. You can only ride a horse for so long

Even after Cam Robinson‘s $ 13.75 million franchise tag, the Jags lead the competition in cap space ($ 73.67 million). They could win a bidding war for any free agent. From now on that group could be included Aaron Jones Chris Carson Kenyan Drake and Marlon MackThe Broncos also have a decision to make about Phillip Lindsay‘s RFA tender.

A Jones or Carson chase may not be in the cards, but the team will be in the mix for a complementary piece – whether in free agency or early in the draft. While Meyer said (via John Oehser of Jaguars.com) that he hopes to build around Robinson, the new Jags HC does indeed want more ball-carrying talent in next year’s squad.

He has done a great job. He will continue to do a great job for the organization, and we think he will even take a step forward from where he was a year ago, ”Said Meyer of Robinson. But adding some competitiveness to that room … we feel like we have some guys in the house who can compete for roles, but we’re definitely looking to add something to that room too

The Illinois state product rushed to 1,070 yards, which was fifth in the league last season. While Robinson is a long way from the open market, the Jaguars may renew him after next season due to his UDFA status. The Jaguars don’t have much depth behind Robinson; potential contributor Ryquell ArmsteadThe NFL’s return is uncertain after missing the entire season due to COVID-19.
