It is estimated that 10-15% of all PS5s in the US are resold

According to a new report, 10-15% of all PS5s sold in the US are resold, which is a huge profit for scalpers, according to a new report. Data engineer Michael Driscoll published the latest in a series of reports on the scalping market, this time focusing on PS5. The report collected data for thousands of listings on eBay and StockX, through January 16. Among other things, Driscoll only included listings that were actually sold, excluded all listings with terms commonly found in scam lists, excluded listings from accounts with little feedback, and removed any results sold for less than the recommended retail price.

Driscoll was left with a figure of 157,000 PS5s sold at retail price or higher on eBay and StockX – 7.06% of the 2,067 million PS5s VGChartz estimates had sold in the US through Jan. 16. Driscoll then looked at active offers from services such as OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace, and Craigslist, which conclude that probably 10-15% of PS5s are resold in the US.

Driscoll’s report is very interesting to read outside of the headlines. On eBay and StockX, the most recent estimated average price for a PS5 digital edition is $ 799 (twice the recommended price), while a disc edition is $ 849 (1.7 times the suggested retail price). Driscoll estimates that scalpers made a profit of $ 43.2 million during that time, with eBay, PayPal and StockX making a combined $ 15.9 million as a result of the resale.

While we can’t be completely sure of the numbers involved (Sony hasn’t released its own official data yet before launch), the report puts the scale of PS5’s resale into perspective, especially as scalping becomes a major topic of conversation in the PS5 launch window. . , Xbox Series X / S and new graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD. Supply shortages and widespread use of automated bots have led to price inflation and repeated disappointments for normal customers. Some UK politicians are even calling for the practice to be made illegal as a result.
