The Michigan governor traveled out of the state to visit a chronically ill father

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer traveled out of state to visit her father, who has a chronic illness, in the past six months and at least a month ago, a spokeswoman told MIRS News from Lansing on Monday. The news comes after Whitmer warned not to travel to Florida for spring break amid an increase in coronavirus cases in the state. Several Michigan health officials reportedly traveled out of the state for spring break, despite Whitmer’s recommendation to stay in Michigan. Whitmer’s “father was fully vaccinated, and the governor is regularly tested and has never tested positive for COVID,” spokeswoman Tiffany Brown told MIRS. The governor traveled to see “her elderly father who is struggling with a chronic illness,” and did not arrive during spring break, Brown said. Brown did not say what state Whitmer was traveling to; however, a source told MIRS that the governor’s father has a home in Florida. Whitmer has also traveled from Michigan to attend President Biden’s inauguration and to visit Michigan National Guard troops in Washington, DC, after supporters of President Trump riot in the Capitol in January. “All trips were very short, two full days or less, closely followed public health guidelines, and were taken when Michigan’s daily positivity rate was in the low single digits,” noted Brown. “Due to ongoing security concerns, we will not comment further on the governor’s personal schedule.” Michigan Republican Party communications director Ted Goodman criticized Whitmer’s decision to travel. “Gov. Whitmer and the Democratic Party have closed the Michigan economy, closed schools, and continue to warn us about travel during this pandemic, yet they refuse to follow the same rules,” Goodman said in a written statement. Government Whitmer’s response to COVID-19 can be summed up as – rules for you, but not for me. “
