Israel and Syria trade strikes against nuclear reactors and air defense systems

The Israeli military said it attacked the missile launcher and air defense systems in Syria in response to a missile launched from the neighboring country that fired air raid sirens near the nuclear reactor.

The Associated Press reported that the attack from Syria on Israel likely involved Iran, which has troops and proxies in Syria. The attacks mark the worst violence between Israel and Syria in several years.

The Israeli military declined to say whether the incoming missile was intercepted by its missile defense system, but said no damage had been reported.

Syria’s state-run news agency reported that four soldiers were injured in Israel’s attack on Damascus.

Iran claimed no responsibility or comment. The AP notes that a hard-line Iranian newspaper over the weekend published an opinion piece by an analyst who proposed targeting Israel’s nuclear facility after Tehran blamed an attack by Israel on the nuclear site earlier this month in Natanz.

Prime Minister Benjamin NetanyahuBenjamin (Bibi) Netanyahu MORE has said Israel will not allow Iran to develop the capability to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has maintained that its nuclear program is serving peaceful purposes.

The incident comes on Thursday amid attempts by the US to revive the international nuclear deal with Iran.
